Thursday, November 05, 2009 U2 and Jay-Z Rock Berlin
Igniting the crowd, U2 was in Berlin for a free mini-concert on Thursday in front of the Brandenburg Gate, playing singles and even a duet with Jay-Z while the show was covered from a public view by a nearly 6 ½ foot high metal barrier. Bono said hello to the crowd with German words “Berlin, Du bist wunderbar!” (Berlin, you are wonderful!) and the band played a 30-minute, six-song set that featured “Sunday, Bloody Sunday,” “One Love” and “Beautiful Day.” Jay-Z was a surprise guest and did Bob Marley’s “Get Up, Stand Up” with Bono. The show was free to the 10,000 ticket holders who were able to get them online last week and in just three hours, but caused some problems because of the huge barrier. Berliners and tourists saw irony in building a wall around a concert dedicated to the wall that had already came down. “It’s completely ridiculous that they are blocking the view,” said Louis-Pierre Boily, 23, who came to Berlin even though he failed to get U2 tickets. “I thought it’s a free show, but MTV probably wants people to watch it on TV to get their ratings up.” MTV organized the concert and said it worked with a promoter, the city and Berlin police to created a temporary fence “around the site to ensure the safety and security of the attendees at the event as well as residents and businesses in the area.” Meanwhile, Concertgoers in the West hurled bottles and firebombs at the wall, while some 2,000 youths gathered on the eastern side to listen, many shouting “The wall must go!”
