Travolta and Pfeiffer To Remake Hairspray

John Travolta will star in a remake of the film Hairspray.  With Adam Shankman directing, the new film features Michelle Pfeiffer as the villainous TV station owner and mother of Tracy’s rival, Queen Latifah as the saucy record-shop owner Motormouth Maybelle, Amanda Bynes as Tracy’s best pal and Christopher Walken as Tracy’s dad and Edna’s husband.

Hairspray is the story of Tracy Turnblad, a Baltimore girl who takes a stand for civil rights in the Sixties by leading the charge to integrate a teen dance show on television. Travolta plays Tracy’s mom, Edna, and says even he got a shock the first time he saw a photo of himself in full make-up, with a huge bust and booty.

He said: “When I first saw that picture I thought it looked like a combination of my sisters Annie and Ellen, but only if Annie ate Ellen!

“I dance a lot in Hairspray and while she’s very big - I play her as though she’s 120 pounds - in her mind she’s light.”

After Hairspray, John will be surrendering to his dark side for the upcoming movie remake of Eighties soap opera Dallas. “They did a poll in the US and 86 per cent of the people questioned chose me to play J.R. I’ve had a whole second career of playing evil - and I kind of look like Larry Hagman. I don’t think it’s odd casting. The people speak.” John has also asked his wife Kelly to take on the role of Sue Ellen, J.R. Ewing’s long-suffering wife, after Jennifer Lopez ditched the part last year.
