Sunday, July 29, 2007 TomKat Wedding Photo Thieves Charged
While Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are back in Germany as Tom continues filming his latest movie, law enforcement agents are busy arresting and prosecuting all those involved in the recent TomKat wedding photo extortion case. As previously reported by the Gossip Girls, David Hans Schmidt contacted Cruise’s camp demanding more than $1 million not to publish some stolen photographs from TomKat’s Italian wedding. Schmidt was arrested on Tuesday, and now he has some company - as his accomplice has joined him behind bars. On Friday, Stephen Tidwell, the head of the office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, named the second suspect as 33-year-old Mark Gittleman. Tidwell stated that Gittleman was taken into custody late Thursday. The two have since been formally charged, as well. Schmidt, who has a history of dealing in compromising celebrity photos, was charged with “sending communications for purposes of extortion” and faces up to 2 years in prison. Gittleman, who stole the photos from the event photographer, faces a more serious “conspiracy to commit extortion” charge that carries a maximum of 5 years in the slammer. Meanwhile, Tom has been busy on the set of his controversial Nazi film, as wife Katie has been spotted enjoying days of cafes and shopping while based in Berlin. Cruise’s attorney stated, “(Tom) is not personally involved in this, as he is in Germany (shooting Valkyrie).” Enjoy the pictures of Katie arriving at Cafe Einstein in Berlin over the weekend (July 28).
