Shooter: Off The Marky Mark?

The newly made ‘Shooter’ premieres on the big screen today (Friday March 23) The shoot ‘em up flick, which stars “working-class, action hero Mark Wahlberg,” is preparing for box-office release amidst mixed reviews.

Although the role is perfect for Wahlberg, who has been typecasted as an honest, hard-working badass (Three Kings, The Corruptor, Four Brothers), critics have described the movie as a “seemingly eternal series of explosions and false endings.”

Still, Americans likes explosions… and they love tough studs like Wahlberg to pull the trigger.  Antoine Fuqua (Tears of the Sun, Training Day, Replacement Killers) directed the film and has never been afraid of a bombarding gun fight or a bloody blast. Despite the bad press, the movie is likely to do quite well. 

IMDB.com described the plot:  “A marksman (Wahlberg) living in exile is coaxed back into action after learning of a plot to kill the president. Ultimately double-crossed and framed for the attempt, he goes on the run to track the real killer and find out who exactly set him up, and why.”

The plot is familiar, but nonetheless is a good formula for action and should be entertaining.  The movie will likely be a further lesson for critics of America’s love for burning wreckage and flying debris.
