Shakira Shakes, Sets Records In Mexico City

Shakira has broken the record for the biggest audience at a public concert. As many as 210,000 people gathered on Mexico City’s central Zocalo square for a free concert by the Colombian pop star.

The show took place late Sunday night (May 27), with fans packed into the square and adjacent streets for the duration of the hip-shaking performance.

"This has been a month of absolute joy. I have fed off you, and I leave with my heart full,” Shakira was quoted as telling the crowd during the night’s festivities.

The Columbian singer’s free concert has not gone unappreciated, with one fan, Yolanda Riesgo, saying: “We think other big artists should play at the Zocalo so that the people who live in Mexico City have access to these types of events because a concert is very expensive and the majority of the people can’t afford it.”

Shakira has plans of staying in Mexico until Wednesday (when she performs in Monterrey), before heading for Turkey to bring an end to her lengthy Oral Fixation Tour, which has featured 119 concerts around the world with an estimated attendance of 2 million people.

210,000 isn’t close to being even in the top ten largest concerts.
