Thursday, May 24, 2007 Say Hello to Your New American Idol: Jordin Sparks
In a star-studded two-hour event, the human beatbox (aka 25year-old Blake Lewis) was conquered by 17year-old Jordin Sparks. With a record 74 million votes cast, this American Idol finale was the biggest to date.
The contest came down to the stronger singer, Sparks, versus the better entertainer, Lewis. While Lewis was showboating and wooing the crowd, Sparks belted out her selections with simplicity and powerful vocals. In the end it was that vocal performance that garnered the majority of those 74 million votes.
The two-hour finale was packed with A-listers, with performances by Smokey Robinson, Aerosmith’s Joe Perry, Green Day and all of the former “Idol” winners except Fantasia Barrino (she’s on Broadway). For their final performances on Tuesday, both contestants sang “This Is My Now,” the tune picked by viewers in an online “American Idol” songwriting contest introduced this season, along with two other songs of their choice. Then, last night, Sparks closed the show with the contest-winning song. It will be her first single. Well, that’s it until next season. Hit those auditions and maybe you’ll be covered by the Gossip Girls in the months to come.
