Tuesday, March 20, 2007 “Reign Over Me” An Emotional Success
“Reign Over Me” is a story set in post 9/11 era, detailing one man’s attempt to rebound and overcome what he has lost. This emotionally heartwrenching movie stars many, but mostly features Adam Sandler (Charlie Fineman) and Don Cheadle (Alan Johnson).
The movie follows Charlie as he struggles to cope with the devastating loss of his family after the September 11th attacks. Charlie and Alan are old college roommates who happen to bump into each other six years after the events of 9/11 take place. The two quickly connect and Alan winds up being the support that Charlie needs to overcome his emotional grief.
The director, Mike Binder, described what the film, also starring Liv Tyler and Jada Pinkett Smith, meant to him. “To me, Reign Over Me boils down to a piece about communication and the restoring powers of having someone to talk to and the flip side of the damage that can slowly accumulate of not having someone to talk to.” Apparently the movie was very difficult for Sandler, who found the film overpoweringly emotional. He claimed “it was very moving to me. I couldn’t stop thinking about it and it hurt my heart when I read it so much. I had a headache almost every day on the set.” Sandler wasn’t the only one in physical pain. Cheadle tore his Achilles heel, which was originally very worrying as he was concerned about being able to maneuver enough to make the film. Despite the difficulties in Reign Over Me, the film is being heralded as a success by cast and critics. This powerful view of human emotion premieres Friday, March 23rd.
