Reese and Jake’s “Rendition” A Box Office Flop

Despite their off-screen romance, Jake Gyllenhaal and Reese Witherspoon’s collaboration on “Rendition” isn’t setting any ticket sales records.

And it has industry insiders scratching their heads.  Usually when stars of a film hook up in real life, people flock to see the movie.  Remember “Mr. and Mrs. Smith”?  The Brad Pitt/Angelina Jolie romance made it into a blockbuster.  Same with “The Break-Up” and “Vanilla Sky.”

But “Rendition” hasn’t been so lucky.  The film opened to a lousy $4 million weekend.  And even now, it has only grossed a little over $8 million.

At the end of the day, Reese and Jake will have to console each other with the possibility of a long-term romance, rather than any news of their new movie’s success.
