Wednesday, March 21, 2007 R&B’s Luther Ingram Passes On At 69
The famed and influential R&B singer Luther Ingram died last night. The singer had received a transplant a few years ago, due to kidney disease, before passing on at the age of sixty-nine.
Born in 1944, in Tennessee, Luther Ingram moved to New York in 1966, to begin his career as a recorded musician. He later moved back to Tennessee and joined the Koko label, which was distributed by Stax.
This partnership proved profitable, as the singer scored a top 10 R&B hit in 1970, “Ain`t That Loving You (For More Reasons Than One).” But the aspiring celebrity wasn’t finished. It wasn’t until Ingram’s rendition of “(If Loving You Is Wrong) I Don’t Want to be Right” that the singer truly elevated himself to stardom, as the tune reached number three on the pop charts and number 1 on the R&B charts.
Despite Ingram being out of our lives, this influential R&B icon’s music will continue to inspire, as it lives on through record.
