Wednesday, April 23, 2008 Nicole Kidman Speaks Out For Women
She’s taking some time off of her acting career during her pregnancy, but don’t call Nicole Kidman a slouch. The “Moulin Rouge” actress was in New York City yesterday fulfilling her role as UNIFEM Goodwill Ambassador at a press conference against violence towards women at the United Nations. Kidman made the point that we’re rarely confronted regarding the staggering statistics in the realm of violence against women. “One in three women will encounter violence in some way, shape or form against them in their lifetime. That’s an extraordinary statistic. Yet do we ever hear it?” Nicole also said that her UNIFEM involvement hits close to home. “I’m a mother, I have a child on the way, I have two children in the world and a lot of (my motivation) is about realizing the things that are wrong and how can I contribute. What are the things I can contribute to help my children have a better life and help other children around the world have a better life and other citizens of the world have a better life.” Enjoy the pictures of Nicole at the United Nations on Tuesday (April 21).

COMMENTS I think Nicole working as a UNIFEM Goodwill Ambassador is quite admirable. Even while she is on maternity leave, she is still finding time to fulfill her duties as an ambassador. I think as a mother of two, and with another one on the way, as well as one of the most successful female actresses of our day, she is a terrific spokesperson for the foundation. Her support of the cause will do wonders in raising awareness for violence against women. The statistics really are scary. She realizes that she can contribute, and I know so many women who have experienced traumatizing violence in their life appreciate Nicole’s work to call attention to such horrifying events taking place. She really has done a terrific job of staying committed and giving back. She has worked to portray herself with a wholesome image, and I believe she is a positive role model for women of all ages. Keep up the good work Nicole. Posted by on 04/23 at 05:20 PM
