Sunday, August 03, 2008 Madonna Hits Up Traverse City Film Festival
Making her way back to Michigan for a rare trip to her home state, Madonna was on-hand for the Fourth Annual Traverse City Film Festival on Saturday evening (August 2). The Material Girl, who brought daughter Lourdes Leon along for the occasion, attended the cinema celebration to take on introductory duties for her documentary “I Am Because We Are,” which is about orphans in Malawi. “You can take the girl out of Michigan but you can’t take Michigan out of the girl,” Madge said to the crowd as she stood aside event co-founder and fellow Michigander Michael Moore. “I don’t get here enough. It’s great to be bringing my movie to a place that feels familiar. Not like the Cannes Film Festival, where nobody’s speaking English, or the Tribeca Film Festival, where no one sits down,” Madonna continued. “There’s something poetic about coming back to the place where I used to come for holidays - camping trips with my dad and stepmother and my very large family,” the 49-year-old singer, who was born in Bay City and raised in Rochester Hills, added. And after the screening ended, Madge got an extra-special treat, with the crowd of fans serenading her with a rendition of “Happy Birthday”. She turns 50-years-old on August 16th.
