Leighton Meester Loves the Gossip Girl Ads
The hit show Gossip Girl is getting ready for its second season, and although critics and parents have put a negative spin on the show’s latest advertising campaign, the cast says they don’t mind at all.
Leighton Meester (who plays Blair Waldorf on the show) told press at the Teen Choice Awards on Sunday: “We just end up seeing it on a billboard somewhere, but I think that it’s smart and it’s fine and it’s cool.”
“They’re very smart,” said Chace Crawford (who plays Nate Archibald on the show). “Everybody keeps saying they’re so racy, of course they’re racy, but you say they’re smart.”
Meanwhile, Ed Westwick (who plays Chuck Bass on the show) is a huge fan of the ad campaign, telling press: “I love [the attention]. I can’t get enough of it.”

I think the ads are both racy and smart, but I worry that it takes the focus from the skills of the actors, who are VERY good at what they do. Shouldn’t the emphasis be on them? Or is that hopelessly naive? I work for BBC America, and right now we’re promoting a British show called “Skins” that’s debuting over here August 17th at 9 p.m. It’s awesome because it’s not just well-written but as with Gossip Girl the casting is just perfect. It deals with a lot of similar themes to Gossip Girl, and I highly recommend you check it out!
