Lawsuit Strikes A Nerve With Avril Lavigne

Don’t call her a copycat, unless you want the wrath of a Canadian punk princess unleashed.  Avril Lavigne is responding to claims that she stole songs to make her own hits, and it isn’t pretty.

The latest rumor is that Lavigne stole a 1979 hit “I wanna be your boyfriend” from a band called the Rubinoos.  The band’s songwriters, Tommy Dunbar and James Gangwer, are pusuing legal action against Avril.

And Avril is hitting back.  “Simply put, I have been falsely accused of ripping their song off. (Songwriting partner) Luke (Gottwald) and I have done nothing wrong and there is no merit to their claim,” she writes on her website.

The “ Complicated” singer even lists a plethora of other songs that are lyrically/musically similar, by bands like the Ramones and the Rolling Stones.  She says the lawsuit has no merit.  “I had never heard this (Rubinoos) song in my life and their claim is based on 5 words.  All songs share similar lyrics and emotions. As humans we speak one language.”

Another supposed scandal deals with her song “Contagious.” Fellow Canadian Chantal Kreviazuk has come forward to claim that Avril used the song without giving proper credit to her.  But Avril says that Kreviazuk’s “Contagious” is not the one used on “The Best Damn Thing.”

On her blog, Avril writes, “I was going to be the bigger person and not reply when I read Chantal Kreviazuk’s article.  Our songs have no similarities and opposite meanings, i.e. different lyrics, different melody, different genres. . . . There are hundreds of songs out there with the title ‘Contagious, 75+ on iTunes alone.”

Enjoy the pictures of Avril performing at Oxygen Fest in Ireland (July 9).

These people are not worn out. The Ramones? The Rolling Stones? They’re classics. Maybe if you stopped listening to crappy pop/punk music and listened to actual punk, you’d see.
