Monday, June 11, 2007 Jennifer Lopez and Ricky Martin: Puerto Rican Parade
New York City’s famous Fifth Avenue was the scene for a raucous party this past weekend. The 50th anniversary of the Puerto Rican Parade was celebrated in grandiose style, with plenty of celebrity power behind it.
The king of the parade was none other than Ricky Martin, who joined NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg in cutting the ribbon to get the shindig started. And Martin’s fans were out in full force to show him love. “We were about to pass out, we were so happy to see him,” said Tania Ochoteco, 33, of the Bronx.
And that was just the start of celebrity Puerto Rican pride. Jennifer Lopez and her husband Marc Anthony both showed up, riding on separate floats and got the crowd going. Mayor Bloomberg gushed with pride over his city’s heritage. “I think the most impressive thing is that people love to be living here and be part of New York and be New Yorkers; at the same time, they’re very proud of their heritage, of where they come from,” Bloomberg said. “And that’s what makes this country unique among countries.” The parade is conducted every year, and includes traditional music, marching bands, and ethnic foods. People come from hundreds if not thousands of miles to experience the cultural phenomenon. Enjoy the pictures of Jennifer Lopez at the Puerto Rican Day Parade!
