Monday, February 26, 2007 Jennifer Hudson Wins Best Supporting Actress Oscar
What a journey it has been for the always graceful Jennifer Hudson. While she may not have won on American Idol, she’s certainly graduated to bigger and better things. At last evening’s Academy Awards, Hudson picked up the Best Supporting Actress Oscar Award for her role as Effie Melody White in the Dreamgirls. In what was one of the few ‘upsets’ of the evening, a clearly emotional Hudson thanked God, her family, the cast, director Bill Condon and original Effie, Jennifer Holiday, as she made her acceptance speech. In winning, the Chicago native beat out nominees Adriana Barraza and Rinko Kikuchi, (Babel,) Abigail Breslin, (Little Miss Sunshine) and Cate Blanchett (Notes on a Scandal.) Hudson, 26, has already picked up several awards for the role. She is also set to get a shot at fulfilling her singing career when she records a solo album with Clive Davis next month. Speaking of singing, Jennifer showed off her vocal chords in a thrilling performance alongside Beyonce towards the end of the evening. Back to the Oscar, her win places her in the league of Hattie McDaniel, the first black actress to win an Oscar for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Gone With the Wind. Only the 13th first-time nominee winner, Jennifer’s indeed come a long way from singing in the church choir. Bookmark this Story | Share with a Friend

COMMENTS Congrats to Jennifer. We all know she’s had some less than flattering things to say about American Idol. However, my question is whether she would be anywhere close to successful as she is now without having been on the show? I say no, but a lot of people have disagreed with me. What do you think? I think jennifer is very talented and that she would have made it anyway without American Idol. jen was sensatuional in Dreamgirls in which she won a Golden Globe Award and now the Oscar. One would say what next is in store for her, joining Destiny child with beyonce and the other girls for a re - union sounds good. Posted by courtney Nugent on 02/27 at 07:52 AM
i agree with you 100% gary. while she is extremely talented, she definitely would be back in the church choir if it were not for idol. the shows ability to provide exposure for a new talent is unmatched, hands down. she’s also lucky that being heavy is making a comeback… new hanes models, etc. Good timing for Hudson.
