Wednesday, October 31, 2007 Jennifer Connelly Explains Pain of Movie Role
We can all think of a moment in our favorite movie where the actor seemed so gripped with the scene that it feels like reality. In a recent interview, Jennifer Connelly revealed that her most recent role in the just-released film “Reservation Road” was the toughest one she’s ever played. The “Labyrinth” actress told press, “About a week into the movie, I thought, ‘What have I done? What have I let myself in for?’ I could feel it in my dreams, having a hard time sleeping, my jaw locking up—tension, physical strain. I couldn’t avoid those feelings, even if I wanted to leave this character on the set.” In the movie, Connelly’s character loses a child in a hit-and-run accident. And when it came time to get into character, she says her own life experience bled through. “I felt almost superstitious in refusing to think about my own kids. I have two sons. I refused to think about them. That said, of course it’s inevitable that you think about them when you’re making a movie about losing a child. I, I didn’t want to. But in some way, you just can’t help but have the performance be informed by the fact that you’re a mother yourself, wondering, fearing how you’d react to something this tragic.”
Jennifer is taking a much needed break from her tendency toward the serious role, though. She’s filming “He’s Just Not That Into You” with Drew Barrymore and Jennifer Aniston. And she’s loving it. “I don’t know if I’m funny in it. That remains to be seen. Am I the straight man or do I get to be funny? I can’t tell. Again, ‘remains to be seen.’ “
