Jay-Z Jumps Ship, Beyonce Takes A Spill

In the recording industry, there’s always a deal to be made.  This time, it looks like Jay-Z is taking his star power from current label Island Def Jam to Columbia Records after Island made some interesting decisions.

Jay may feel a bit crowded after Jermaine Dupri was added to the executive level of Island’s urban music division earlier this year.  A source close to Jay told press, “There isn’t room for two kings at one label.  Why would Island bring in another power-hitter urban guy?”

And now that Dupri’s leading lady Janet Jackson has signed with Island, Jay is looking to jump from Island to Columbia, the same company that his girlfriend Beyonce is signed with.

Columbia is more than happy to consider Jay-Z.  He’d be bringing all of his own master recordings, and he has arguably the most industry credit of his peers.  Co-chair Rick Rubin is doing some massive restructuring and Jay’s presence would be welcome, says an insider.

“He’s creating a supergroup of staff.  So it would make sense that he would want Jay on his side.” We’ll have more on this story as it develops.

On a side note, Jay’s lady took quite the spill a few nights back while performing in Orlando.
