Gossip Girl Caught in the Act: Reality or Fiction?

With a fresh cast and intense storyline, it’s no surprise that the new CW show Gossip Girl has drawn both praise and criticism as it focuses on a darker side of life for the super rich in NY. Intended to fill the audience gap created with the loss of Veronica Mars, Gossip Girl has done a good job of capturing its young audience’s interest with stories of sex, drugs, and pretty much everything else you can think of.

In a recent appearance on The View, co-star Blake Lively defended the show from critics who claimed the series is nothing more than a string of improbable situations stacked on top of each other. According to Blake, the show leverages what she termed a sense of “heightened reality” in order to connect with its audience.

"I think a lot of the realism is lost in the sparkle, and it’s meant to. You need that for the entertainment and the grit… But this stuff does happen and it’s good that we get to address these issues. It does open the door for conversations for parents to have with their children,” Blake tells.

However, this “heightened reality” seems to have caused some memory issues, as fellow co-star Leighton Meester was recently caught by Radar Online smoking weed with friends at NYC’s Goldbar. While this situation could be pulled right out of the show’s script, it appears someone forgot to tell Leighton to turn off her “heightened reality” when she leaves the set.
