Fergie: More Than Meets the Eye
Sure, she’s the token white girl in Black Eyed Peas. But Fergie has proven herself to be so much more than just a pretty face with a killer voice.
Stacy Ann Ferguson, aka Fergie, has had a lifelong dream of being a successful performer. She recently told an interviewer, “When I was six or seven, my mom used to take me to musicals. I would sit in the audience, and I wanted to be onstage. My mother saw me standing in front of the mirror singing Annie, and she asked me if that was the job I wanted-to be a singer. I told her that’s what I wanted to do. This was a no-brainer for me.”
After a stint on the children’s show “Kid’s Incorporated” Fergie decided it was time to break out into the music world for real, so she started a girl’s group called “Wild Orchid” with fellow “Kid’s” co-star Renee Sandstrom in 1994. It proved to be a failure, and when they finally called it quits in 2001, the “My Humps” singer lost it.
Fergie developed an addiction to crystal meth, a downfall that almost killed her. “I had chemically induced paranoid schizophrenia. At one point I gave myself an ultimatum, because I was absolutely sure the FBI and a SWAT team were coming for me. I said, ‘OK, if you walk through that door and they’re not out there, then it’s the drugs.’”
So she kicked that habit, and went on to pursue bigger and better things… like the Black Eyed Peas, who happened to be searching for a pop element to bring them into the mainstream. Fergie was just what the doctor ordered.
With the major success of the Peas, Fergie branched out on her own with “The Duchess,” yielding three number-one hits. She also just won an American Music Award earlier this week. And she doesn’t show any signs of slowing down.
