Wednesday, October 17, 2007 Dog Drama For Ellen Degeneres
In an unlikely but heartbreaking tale, Ellen DeGeneres has stirred up some serious trouble for a dog rescue shelter. The story goes, Ellen adopted a dog from a shelter. But when she discovered that her cats didn’t dig the new canine, she immediately gave it to her hairstylist, who has two young kids. Unfortunately, she wasn’t at liberty to do that, hence the shelter intervened and removed the dog from the hairstylist’s home. Apparently Mutts And Moms, the agency that arranged for DeGeneres to adopt a rescued dog from their shelter, is receiving death and arson threats. The troubling phone calls and emails started after they confiscated the dog that the talk show host gave to her hairstylist’s family. According to Marina Batkis and Vanessa Chekroun, Ellen had no right to give the dog to her friend, and in doing so she violated the terms of the adoption. And Batkis is sticking to her guns, rejecting DeGeneres’ tearful plea to return the dog to the hairstylist’s family. Attorney Keith Fink told press, “She (Batkis) doesn’t think this is the type of family that should have the dog. She is adamant that she is not going to be bullied around by the Ellen DeGenereses of the world ... They are using their power, position and wealth to try to get what it is they want.”
The rules of adoption, per shelter policy, are that homes with children under 14 are not allowed to receive dogs. “It’s for the safety of the dogs,” said a kennel spokesperson.

COMMENTS Ellen is a complete fake. I don’t for a moment believe that she didn’t understand the shelter’s rule regarding pets or that her TV tears were real She is an actress after all and her “breakdown” was over the top.

If Ellen signed an agreement with an agency and defaulted on said agreement then she is legally in the wrong. The agency should not be punished. By now if Ellen has not learned to read agreements then she deserves just what she got. However, her behavior on her TV show was a blatant abuse of her celebrity and can be viewed no better than Spears, Hilton and the rest. I would respect Ellen if she had gone on with the show and resolved this issue in the personal venue inwhich it belongs. I do not feel sorry for Ellen and she should take here medicine like the rest of us poor middle class people. Why didn’t she gather up the family she gave the dog to and make an outing to find another pet. SHE CAN AFFORD IT. Shame on you, Ellen! Posted by on 10/17 at 12:06 PM
Ithink that ellen did nothing wrong, she could’ve lied but she did’nt,she was honest with the shelter people, and she found a loving home for the dog.I also think that ellen is not trying to use her wealth to get her way with this situation, because it is no secret that ellen loves dogs, and i know that she just simply does’nt want the dog to go back to the shelter after all that’s why she adopted the dog in the first place. My heart goes out to you Ellen and the family which the dog was taken away. Fooey on those that don’t appreciate the love that one can have for animals as I do also. She made my cry watching this show and hopefully that this cute little dog will be given back to those 2 little girls.
Take care! xx

Somewhat surprised how Craig’slist pet forum responded. Typically a savvy, emotional, pro-adoption group, one would have expected the forum to attack the shelter for taking dogs away from a home, from children. On the contrary, when the dust settled, the sentiment was that Ellen should have made the call to the shelter that she could not keep the dog. Also, Ellen should not have taken this public on her show. Here is what one forum member said about the shelter. “we adopted our dog, Apple from Mutts & Moms 2007-10-16 15:52:14 I feel bad for the kids, but I know first hand that this rescue isn’t made up of crazies and I feel bad that she is being made to look like a villain. I don’t think it was right for Ellen to take it to national tv - a little over dramatic. The rescue is run by one woman out of a corner pet shop that sells high end dog foods and boutique type toys and dog accessories. Posted by on 10/17 at 01:57 PM
Ellen was trying to do what she thougt was best for the dog. What could have been more positive publicity for animal rescue organiztions has turned into a PR disaster. In the end, the real victims here could be the animals. People may opt to buy dogs from breeders instead of getting them from rescue organizations. Posted by on 10/17 at 02:24 PM

Ellen is completely wrong here. She wants the animal shelter to bend the rules for her because she is a celebrity. The truth is that the rules exist for a reason, and that is to protect the animals. Contrary to what Ellen says, it’s not JUST about finding a home. It’s ALSO about making sure the home is permanent and that it is the home that was specifically screened for the dog. In many cases, people adopt animals as fronts for animal testing facilities and owners that wouldn’t otherwise be approved. Ellen, wise up. I have lost all respect for you, as you’ve tried to use the bully pulpit to torture this kind animal rescue organization into fulfilling your misguided wishes. I am very sorry for the family involved, but they need to adopt directly from the shelter, not from Ellen. There are millions of loving, adoptable dogs out there that need good homes. I would like to know why Mutts and Moms did not go by their own policy and do a home check on Ellen. Also on the application it asks about other pets. Why would they adopt out this pup to a home with cats? A reputable rescue would already know if the dog got along with cats and if not, would never have adopted the dog out to a home with cats. Their application, adoption procedures, contract and there responsibility to the dog all seem to have gone out the window when they could say they adopted a dog to Ellen. It looks like Mutts and Moms will now fell what it is like on the other side of what goes around comes around. The sad part of this besides what she did to the little girl and her family is that Mutts and Moms have heart all reputable rescue. Hopefully future adopters will look close at the contracts and weather or not the rescue is a real non profit (with there own 501c3) before they adopt. Just because they say there a non profit, dose not mean they are. Posted by on 10/18 at 02:07 AM
Ellen is indeed a fake heart. She NEVER made it clear that she screwed up. Instead - like a spoiled girl - she explains herself over and over… I had the dog trained and spend money on him - see how good a person I am. I spayed/neuter the dog - see how good I am. the shelter took the dog away from children .. please return the dog to the children.. WTF… Ellen must have been informed by the shelter that the hairdresser family can adopt the dog via them. Ellen fails to mention that - although she must know that. Ellen - please adopt a backbone and not an animal!!!! Posted by on 10/20 at 11:52 AM
