Wednesday, November 21, 2007 Dennis Quaid Twins Hospitalized
Dennis Quaid and his wife Kimberly welcomed twins into the world, via surrogate, a couple of weeks ago. However, their overwhelming joy was almost immediately overshadowed by the possibility of tragedy. It seems the pros over at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center accidentally gave the twins, Thomas Boone and Zoe Grace, 10,000 units of an anti-coagulant called heparin via IV. Usually newborns are given 10 units. A rep for the actor told press, “Dennis and Kimberly appreciate everyone’s thoughts and prayers and hope they can maintain their privacy at this difficult time.” Though, Cedars-Sinai didn’t directly comment on the Quaid twins, Dr. Michael L. Langberg, the chief medical officer, offered an apology and explanation to the “three unidentified patients” who received the megadose of heparin. “I want to extend my deepest apologies to the families who were affected by this situation, and we will continue to work with them on any concerns or questions they may have. This was a preventable error, involving a failure to follow our standard policies and procedures, and there is no excuse for that to occur at Cedars-Sinai.”
He continued, “Although it appears at this point that there was no harm to any patient, we take this situation very seriously. Additional medical tests and clinical evaluation conducted on the two patients indicated no adverse effects from the higher concentration of heparin or from the temporary abnormal clotting function,” Langberg said. “Doctors continue to monitor the patients.”
