Chesney and Underwood Light Up CMA’s

Country music’s biggest night had some very memorable moments.  Both the veteran and the newcomer had a place at the table, as Kenny Chesney, Carrie Underwood, George Strait and Brooks and Dunn were the big winners of the night, while cameras snapped away at coutry’s supercouple - Faith Hill and Tim McGraw.

Brooks and Dunn were the recipients of their 14th vocal duo award.  “It’s still as much fun as it’s ever been, and we’re going to keep doing it,” an exuberant Kix Brooks said as the duo claimed the trophy.  The winning duo had some tough competition, beating out Sugarland, Montgomery Gentry, Big & Rich, and the Wreckers (for you Michelle Branch fans out there).

Kenny Chesney claimed his third straight award as entertainer of the year.  He also took home the Song of the Year trophy.  As he collected his award, he seemed particularly touched that as an older performer he wasn’t forgotten. “I’m old enough to be Carrie Underwood’s grandfather,” the 55-year-old said of his 24-year-old fellow singer.

But the 2005 American Idol winner Carrie Underwood wasn’t one to be outdone.  She won the Album of the Year honors for her debut “Some Hearts”.  Underwood also walked away with the award for top female vocalist.  “I would not be here if it were not for ‘American Idol, “ she said as she collected her award. “Thank you, fans. God bless you.”

Miranda Lambert won new female vocalist, beating out former “American Idol” contestant Kellie Pickler and teenage country star Taylor Swift. Brad Paisley was named male vocalist of the year, and Rascal Flatts captured best vocal group.

The CMA’s may be the only night that things like twang, tuxedos, and cowboy hats are found in the same room.  Congrats to all the nominees and winners of last night.
