Britney Spears: Headed For Trial
It seems like we’ve been hearing forever about pop singer Britney Spears’ case of driving-without-a-license. But we are about to hear even more, as Brit’s attorney has rejected a final deal from prosecutors.
Ms Spears was offered the option of paying $150 and spending one year on probation for the misdemeanor charge, which would help avoid an embarrassing trial in the case.
The 26-year-old Spears’ attorney, J. Michael Flanagan, is saying that the “Womanizer” singer, who corrected the violation and obtained a valid California driver’s license, should only be charged a small $10 fine. Flanagan has also guaranteed to appeal any convictions that may result. Trial will begin on October 15th.
The incident happened when Brit was going through an ordeal of personal troubles. In August 2007, she nicked a parked car and fled from the scene. Although the hit-and-run count was discharged a year ago, the charge of not having a California license (she did have a valid Louisiana license) was not dropped.
The VMA winner has had court appearance problems before and Flanagan has been making sure nothing else goes wrong while not accepting the plea. He recently tried to prevent the case from going to trial, along with asking for last month’s session to be put on hold because Spears was still in conservatorship and “unable to participate meaningfully in the procedures.”
A three-judge panel of the Los Angeles Superior Court unanimously denied his request yesterday.
