Thursday, July 05, 2007 Avril Lavigne Has A Lot To Answer For
In the always-interesting world of the music business, Avril Lavigne has found herself in a sticky situation. And it could mean big bucks.
It seems that the Canadian punk princess has ticked off a few songwriters with her song pirating ways. The most recent example is surrounding her hit “Girlfriend” from “The Best Damn Thing.”
Apparently, Avril’s hit sounds an awful lot like “I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend” by the Rubinoos. While the “Boyfriend” song was a hit in the 70’s, founding member Tommy Dunbar claims that Lavigne stole their hit to make one of her own. And closer to home, fellow Canadian musician Chantal Kreviazuk is calling the “Sk8er Boi” singer out on her claims to be a songwriter in Performing Songwriter magazine. “I find it funny that it’s in ‘Performing Songwriter’. I mean, Avril, songwriter? Avril doesn’t really sit and write songs by herself or anything.” Kreviazuk went on to illustrate further Avril’s song stealing tendencies. “Avril will also cross the ethical line, and no one says anything. That’s why I’ll never work with her again. I sent her a song two years ago called “Contagious,” and I just saw the track listing to this album [’The Best Damn Thing’] and there’s a song called “Contagious” on it - and my name’s not on it. What do you do with that?” It seems that Miss Avril has some explaining to do. Until then, enjoy the pictures of Avril performing in Berlin on July 2, as well as at a Madrid photocall a week earlier.
