Angelia Jolie’s Mother Loses Fight With Cancer

Angelina Jolie is coping with the loss of her mother over the weekend. She announced on Sunday that her mother, Marcheline Bertrand has lost her six-year battle with ovarian cancer.

According to E Online, Marcheline Bertrand passed away on Saturday afternoon at Los Angeles’ Cedar-Sinai Medical Center and Angelina Jolie was at her side, along with her brother James Haven and her partner Brad Pitt.

Jolie jetted across the country to get to the hospital when she heard that her mother’s condition had worsened. She reportedly arrived four hours before her mother’s passing. Bertrand was only 56 years old (although some news sources have listed her age as 59) and had been battling cancer for nearly seven years.

Bertrand married Angelina Jolie’s father, Jon Voight, in 1971 and put her acting career on hold to have two children, James and Angelina. Their parents split in 1976 and their divorce was finalized two years later. Marcheline raised Angelina and James on her own with Angelina not even speaking to her father for years. The two briefly reconciled after co-starring in Tomb Raider but had another falling out and haven’t spoken to each other in years.

Marcheline only has three known credits: The Man Who Loved Women, Lookin’ to Get Out, and an episode of Ironside, but Angelina credits her with giving her daughter the desire to be an actress.

Lea Hunter, an ex-girlfriend of Angelina’s brother, James, spoke to People Magazine, “Marcheline was beautiful, caring and totally devoted to her children. I never saw her upset or sad, even after she was diagnosed with cancer.”

Jolie also stated that the funeral will be held privately and asked that instead of flowers, well-wishers send donations to the Women’s Cancer Research Institute at Cedars-Sinai.

When Shiloh was born in May, Marcheline Bertrand said “My heart is overflowing with joy with the new arrival of Brad and Angelina’s third child. Maddox, Zahara and Shiloh are deeply loved children. They have very kind and caring parents who love and support each other in every way.”
