American Idol Update

Last night was round two of eliminations for the Fox Network’s American Idol.  The contestants were subject to a British Invasion theme, which came out quite nicely.  The show wasn’t lacking in the painful vocal moments, though!

Overall, the two best performers seem to be Jordin Sparks and Melinda Doolittle.  Sparks brought the pain, as she always does, with something new.  Doolittle will have to start varying her songs/performance or risk becoming boring, though.

All that said, the two standouts Tuesday night were Blake Lewis, with his very cool updated version of “Time of the Season,” and Sanjaya Malakar, rocking out to, get this, “You Really Got Me.” Sanjaya wasn’t really “good,” but somehow it seemed appealing. He just let it fly and it was fun.

Lakisha Jones was still solid (”Diamonds are Forever”; Chris Richardson did well (”Don’t Let the Sun Catch You Crying”; Chris Sligh brought his A game (”She’s Not There”. Stephanie Edwards didn’t (”You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me”; Phil Stacey is more generic than ever (”Tobacco Road”; Gina Glocksen was also forgettable (”Paint it Black”. Haley Scarnato was sizzling with “Tell Him.” Red hot.

As guest vocal coach, Noone said, “This isn’t a singing competition, sorry Simon, it’s a voting competition.
