I don’t think she dropped out of The Reader I think they dumped her because she’s box office poison,
The author of the book was quite excited that Kate Winslet was able to come in & re-take the roll. SHE was the first choice to play that part, not Kidman.
And since when is Kate Winslet box-office gold? She has made mostly small, independent movies since Titanic and I don’t think she draws bigger audiences than Kidman does so that’s not the reason she received the part again, it was entirely due to Kidman’s decision to back out since she is pregnant for the first time and needs time off movie making. She’s been working very hard non-stop for a very long time.
They both very much like these kinds of films that go outside the mainstream, superficial and stereotypical Hollywood movie productions so sometimes they compete for the same roles.
It is good to see a pregnant woman working to keep fit. She looks very good.
If anybody thinks that Kidman was dumped from T’Reader then they are mistaken. Rudin et al., all asked Kidman to step in because of Kate’s commitment but with Kidman’s good news, things eventually worked out. The movie is not going to make any money with Kate in the role, not in the US or abroad but it would have with Kidman.
Kidman is written about by the gossip media and Perez Hilton followers as a box office poison but she has made about $1.4bn for the studios in the US Box office alone. She has opened all her mainstream movies at $20m apart from Invasion and has one of the best per screen openers.
Kidman has never been a bo big hitter but she is not going anywhere, she will continue to earn her $15m for Hollywood movies because it is the directors and producers who come knocking. She doesn’t go begging. Doug Liman is already touting her as his Valerie Plame.
