The Madonna Adoption Controversy

Madonna, Guy Ritchie, David Banda, Lola Leon, Rocco Ritchie

Leave the woman and her family alone!

By now you’ve all heard of the Madonna adoption controversy, so I’m not going to post all the details.. but rather I’m going to tell you what I think.

Madonna didn’t adopt for selfishness or media attention. She truly fell in love with a beautiful baby boy and wanted to save his life. This child was abandoned in an orphanage and basically left for dead. The illnesses he has overcome and the poor start he’s had so far would have only progressed to a very sad demise. I truly believe that she has her heart in the right place and David’s best interest at heart. Sure she’s controversial and well, Kabbalah isn’t exactly mainstream.. but if you put all of that aside she’s actually quite a good mother to her children, Lola and Rocco. I support Madonna and Guy Ritchie. I hope the legal mess in Malawi is dismissed by the courts and everyone can get on with their lives. She came to Malawi to help people and they are treating her as though she’s a kidnapper. Don’t they want people to help them? Is it wrong to want to save a kid’s life? Whoever is the mastermind behind the war that’s being waged against Madonna and the legal adoptions process that she’s going through should be ashamed of themselves.

As Madonna said, “I beg all of those people to go to Africa and see what I saw and walk through those villages. … To see 8-year-olds in charge of households. To see mothers dying, with Kaposi sarcoma lesions all over their bodies. To see open sewages everywhere. To see what I saw. It is a state of emergency. As far as I’m concerned, the adoption laws have to be changed to suit that state of emergency. I think if everybody went there, they’d want to bring one of those children home with them and give them a better life.”

“I did have my heart set on David. I did meet other children that I was open to adopting, so if it hadn’t worked out with David, I would have considered any of those children a blessing.”

“My goal is that I will give David an education and a chance for a better life. What a better way for David to go back and help his own people and help the Malawians and be a voice for his country than to first have a life?”

Walker comments on: Reese Witherspoon Fights Domestic Violence in the UK

Good for her. I feel like domestic violence is the red-headed step-child of violence issues. It’s easy to speak out against government-induced famine, or wars that kill civilians, or rape. But domestic violence is a very sensitive issue because it is so common! I’m glad Reese is getting people talking.

Another voice brave enough to speak on domestic violence is that of Marala Scott, author of the book, “In Our House: Perception vs. Reality.” She is specifically interested in the “Indicators of an Abuser,” a tool she developed to help people recognize patterns in others (or in themselves) that might signify abusive tendencies in the future. Really fascinating stuff, that - you can see them here.

Keep up the good work, Reese!
