While Oscar night is the biggest event in the movie business, it is also a fashion show of the highest ranks. To many, one of the biggest fashion surprises at Sunday night’s Academy Awards came early, with the white shoes and rust velvet tux on host Ellen DeGeneres. While that outfit seemed like an odd choice, Meryl Streep took even more heat for her garb. Sylvia Rubin of the SF Chronicle was one of her critics. posted by at 12:00 PM | (0) comments |

At the star-studded Academy Awards on Sunday, Martin Scorsese’s mob epic “The Departed” won best picture, earning the filmmaker the directing prize that had eluded him throughout his illustrious career. “Could you double-check the envelope?” said Scorsese, who had been referred to as the greatest living American filmmaker without an Oscar. He also had never delivered a best-picture winner before, despite crafting such modern masterpieces as “Raging Bull” and “Goodfellas.” Scorsese received his Oscar from three contemporaries and friends, Steven Spielberg, Francis Ford Coppola and George Lucas. “So many people over the years have been wishing this for me,” Scorsese said. posted by at 10:28 AM | (0) comments |
permalink Best Actor Oscar For Forest Whitaker
Forest Whitaker won the Oscar for best actor Sunday for portraying former Ugandan dictator Idi Amin in the movie ‘The Last King of Scotland.’ Whitaker, born in Longview, Texas in 1961 and raised in East Los Angeles, gained 50 pounds to play Amin and dazzled critics with his portrayal of the mercurial, brutal dictator, won the Oscar on his first-ever nomination.
The emotionally charged Whitaker took several long breaths, his Oscar statue in hand, before pronouncing himself “overwhelmed” by the award and pulling out a prepared speech.

permalink ‘The Queen’ Earns Helen Mirren An Oscar
As was expected, Helen Mirren was honored with this year’s Academy Award for best actress. It comes as little surprise, as she pretty much swept all of the other awards shows building up to the golden Oscar itself. This is Mirren’s first Academy Award, although she has been nominated twice before. Her portrayal of the reserved Elizabeth II in the days following Princess Diana’s shocking death in 1997 brought her overwhelming critical acclaim. posted by at 06:10 AM | (0) comments |
