Tuesday, May 29, 2007 Depp’s Pirates Tops Memorial Day Weekend Record
Historically, Memorial Day weekend is the kick off for Summer movie season. It’s also a good indicator for how the box office will fare throughout the coming months. And with $142.1 million in ticket sales, “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” set a new record for the weekend.
Pirates didn’t quite make it to the Spiderman 3 level, though. The movie runs two hours, 47 minutes, almost half an hour longer than “Spider-Man 3.” That limited the number of screenings theaters could fit in. “Spider-Man 3” also opened amid lighter competition, while “At World’s End” was up against “Spider-Man 3” and DreamWorks Animation’s “Shrek the Third.”

It’s here again: movie season! With the upcoming Memorial Day weekend upon us, it’s time to see what the new batch of movies are made of. We’ve already seen Spiderman 3 shatter the opening weekend record, and Shrek The Third is close behind. Can the latest Johnny Depp film topple them all?
It’s true that there is fierce competition for box office notoriety this season. But it looks like the latest Pirates of the Caribbean installment - At World’s End - will fare just fine. Doubting their ability to overtake the Spiderman 3 record, Pirate producer Jerry Bruckheimer said, ``I don’t think you can break their record, because when they came in the marketplace, there weren’t a lot of big movies. So there were a lot of screens available.”
